2.5 REPAIR AND INSPECTION DETAILS:

A. Accessory Driving Belt:

Inspect the belt for excessive wear or damage.

Replace the belt if any of the following are

noticed:

Hardening - belt will be glossy and hard. Pressing

on the belt with a fingernail will not make an

impression.

Cracks in rubber.

Canvas showing

Broken, cracked, or missing belt tooth

Excessive wear on side of belt. The side of

the belt should appear to have been cut

with a knife.

In the early stages of belt wear, the load side of

the belt teeth will look like fluffy canvas with some

of the rubber missing.

In the later stage of wear, the canvas will be gone

from the belt teeth and showing exposed rubber.

B. Timing Chain :

Timing Chain is a part of a

n internal combustion engine

that synchronizes the rotation of the

crankshaft

and the

camshaft s

o that the engine

valves

open and close at the proper times during

each cylinder's intake and exhaust

strokes.

In an

interference engine

the timing belt or chain is also

critical to preventing the

piston

from striking the

valves.

C. Cylinder Head:

NOTE

The mating surfaces of the cylinder head

are not machinable. If the surface is

warped, uneven, or damaged otherwise,

replace the cylinder head.

1. Check for cracks in the cylinder head by

pressure testing.

2. Using a straightedge, check several points on

the mating surface of the cylinder head

lengthwise and crosswise over the surface.

Use a feeler gauge under the straightedge to

determine the unevenness of the cylinder

head. Replace the head if the surface is out of

specification within a 150 mm by 150 mm

square.
