INSTALLATION OF BRAKE BACK PLATE

:

1. Clean the back plate. Fit the wheel cylinder to

the brake back plate as specified in the

Installation of wheel cylinder.

2. Lightly smear high melting point graphite

grease to the back plate back pads and

abutment, contact faces of the strut, hand

brake lever, etc. Keep the grease away from

the brake shoe lining

Installation of Brake shoe:

1. Attach the shoe return spring (2) to the trailing

shoe. Fit the pawl (3) to the pin (10). Hook the

short end of the spring into the hole in the pawl

lever and use pliers to attach the opposite end

of the spring on to the web.

2. With the adjuster assembly in its minimum

length condition, offer the short leg of the male

rod to the pawl.

3. Fit the male fork end to the leading shoe and

attach the shoe return spring to the appropriate

hole in the shoe.

4. Attach the other shoe return spring to the

opposite end of the shoes and adjust the

length of the adjuster until the shoes will clear

the wheel cylinder pistons.

5. Place the shoes, springs and adjuster on to the

abutment plate of the back plate and locate the

spring (2) under the plate and the shoes in the

abutment groove.

6. Using Shoe Hold down Tool fit the shoe hold

down springs and pins to both the shoes.

Remove the elastic band from around the

wheel cylinder and reduce the length of the

adjuster assembly until the shoes rest on the

wheel cylinder pistons.

7. Fit the hand brake cable to the lever on the

trailing shoe, ensuring the nipple on the cable

is correctly located in the end of the lever.

NOTE:

The cable should just be tight without

pulling the operating lever from the ‘fully off’

position.

8. Clean the exterior of the drum with a wire

brush and wipe the inside with a clean rag.

NOTE

: If the drum looks in poor condition, or is

scored inside where the brake shoes touch, fit

a new drum.

9. Offer the drum to the brake and adjust the

length of the adjuster until it is only just

possible to fit the drum over the brake shoes.

10.Check the pawl is in contact with the adjuster

nut on the adjuster and fit the drum.

11.Repeat procedure with the opposite rear

brakes and operates the foot brake through its

full stroke 10 to 20 times.

12.Check the movement of the hand brake and

road test the vehicle.
