Components :

A. Exhaust Manifold :

The exhaust manifold is mounted on

the cylinder head. The exhaust gases are trapped

out from the engine through the exhaust manifold.

B. Turbocharger

(WGT) :

The power output from an internal combus-

tion engine depends on the mass of the air and fuel

quantity that are available for combustion. To in-

crease the engine horse power, more air for

combustion and more fuel have to be delivered.

The turbocharger is one of the common

super charging devices used in an engine. It makes

use of thermal energy of engine exhaust gases to

run a turbine which in turn drives a compressor to

pressurize the inlet air. It also helps in improving the

volumetric efficiency of the engine.

Waste Gate

This feature in turbocharger consists of a

bypass valve built into turbine housing controlled by

an actuator. Some part of the exhaust gas going to

the turbine is bypassed through this valve. This is

as shown in the sketch. The waste gate arrange-

ment reduces the high boost pressure developed by

the compressor to the desired value, thus obtaining

the optimum engine performance with controlled

peak cylinder pressure.

Precautions :

Avoid Lifting the turbo-charger by holding the

actuator.

Avoid Lifting turbo-charger holding the rod end of

the actuator.

Avoid Lifting turbo-charger holding the compres-

sor side.

Hold the turbo-charger at the turbine housing

/center housing.

No foreign particles (dust/dirt) should enter the

vacuum line.

Ensure the conditions of handling and installation

of turbocharger/manifold are such that there is

no risk of shocks, dropping the turbocharger or

damage to the sealing surfaces (turbine housing

inlet and outlet surfaces, compressor inlet and

outlet, oil circuit), or damage to the actuator or

flow adjusting rod and screw which might lead to

the misalignment.

If the turbocharger is dropped, then it should be

inspected. If it is damaged, it should not be used.

Put few drops of oil during assembly and rotate

the wheel with finger. Look for free movement of

wheel with no wheel rubbing.
