1.2.2 REGULAR MAINTENANCE

A. CHECK ANCHORAGE AND ELECTRICAL

CONNECTION

1. Check anchorage and electrical connection on

the steering (steering column, steering gear and

transmission parts).

2. If necessary, tighten screws etc. according to

instructions from vehicle manufacturer, or if there

is any damage, replace defective parts.

B. CHECK DRIVING STRAIGHT - AHEAD PO-

SITION OF STEERING & VEHICLE

1. Place front wheels on rotary tables and deter-

mine total number of steering wheel rotations.

2. From one steering stop, turn back by half the

number of steering wheel rotations. Then contin-

ue turning until the markers (if present) on the

steering spindle/protective cap and steering gear

are aligned.

NOTE

If no markers are present, then turn the steering gear

from steering stop to steering stop. Then turn back

from one steering stop by half the total number of

steering wheel rotations.

3. Check whether the wheels being steered are in

the straight-ahead position.

4. Make any correction which may be necessary

by turning the ball joint on the tie rod in or out.

! CAUTION

A previous accident-type incident may necessitate a

revision of the setting needs.

Therefore,

Check the steering system for warped installation,

Check all other transmission parts for deformation,

cracks, or torsion.

C. CHECK PLAY IN THE STEERING COLUMN

1. Check for play by moving the steering wheel

back and forwards horizontally and vertically.

Once clearance is found, check the steering

column bearing or replace the steering column.

D. CHECK STEERING’S PLAY

1. When turning the steering wheel, immediate

steering motion response of the front wheels is

requested. If no adequate response occurs, find

the defective part - (steering column, intermedi-

ate shaft, and rack-and-pinion steering - and, if

necessary, replace it.

E. STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT/ CENTRAL-

ISING

1. Park the unladen vehicle with tyres in straight

ahead position on a level ground.

2. With the tyres in straight ahead position the steer-

ing wheel may not be aligned, to align it do the
