Transmission System Overview
:
The 6L50 is a six speed transmission for rear and all-wheel drive vehicle, electronically controlled. Changing
gear ratios is fully automatic and is accomplished through the use of a Transmission Control Module (TCU)
located within the transmission. The transmission module receives and monitors various electronic sensor
inputs and CAN data to calculate and command gear ratio change.
The interface between the control modules and components are showed in the following block diagram
which includes:
-TCU (Transmission Control Unit).
-EMS (Engine Management System).
-BCM (Body Control Module) if equipped.
-Electrical components: IMS (internal Mode Switch), speed sensors, temp sensor.
The transmission module is connected to the
vehicle with a pass through 16 pins connector. The
communication with the other vehicle modules is
completed via the CAN bus. The CAN bus is
application specific. The variety of gear ranges in
the automatic transmission is made possible
through the interaction of numerous mechanically,
hydraulically
and
electronically
controlled
components inside the transmission. At the
appropriate time and sequence, these components
are either applied or released and operate the
gears that a gear ratio consistent with the driver’s
needs.
