BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT :

Removal :

NOTE :

Release the hand brake before proceeding to

remove the brake shoes.

1. Remove the axle shaft assembly from the

rear axle.

(For procedure refer axle shaft

removal in rear axle section)

2. Remove the brake assembly

(Parking Brake)

from the axle shaft. (For procedure refer axle

shaft dismantling in rear axle section.)

3. Remove the cover from brake adjusting hole.

4. With the help of a screw driver reduce the

adjuster assembly to its minimum length by

rotating the adjuster nut.

5. Using a suitable drift, tap out the end of shoe

return spring from the hole in the abutment

end of lined shoe.

6. Compress and remove the spring plate and

remove shoe hold down pin from the back

plate.

7. Manipulate the shoes to detach the adjuster

assembly and shoe return spring.

8. Detach the adjuster unit assembly from the

shoes and clean the unit.

Cleaning :

Clean the back plate thoroughly; use a soft

wire brush to remove any corrosion.

Ensure shoe sliding platforms on the dust

shield are smooth and not corroded. If

necessary, smooth the platforms with a fine

emery-cloth.

Examine the adjuster assembly to see it is in

good working order and ensure the adjuster

nut is free to run the full length of the thread.

Fitment :

1. Assemble male and female pushrods

(to its

minimum length)

with adjuster nut.

2. Assemble the shoes and shoe return spring in

the reverse order of removal.

3. With the adjuster assembly in its minimum

length condition, assemble the adjuster

assembly between the shoe webs.

NOTE :

Lubricate the adjuster screw threads with a

thin film of SPHEEROL grease before

assembling.

4. Fit the pin and spring plate of shoe hold down

to both the shoes.

NOTE :

Thin film of lithium base grease to be

smeared on the shoe seating area on adaptor

and shield at the time of relining.

5. Fit the hand brake cable to the pull rod,

ensuring the cable is correctly located in the

end of the pull rod.

NOTE :

The cable should just be tight without pulling

the operating lever from the “fully off” position.

6. Ensure that the lined shoe is free from oil and

grease.

7. Clean the exterior of the drum with a wire

brush and wipe the inside with a clean rag.

NOTE :

If the drum looks in poor condition or is scored

from inside where the brake shoes touch,

replace the drum.

Whenever new shoes are fitted, ensure to fit

new shoe return springs also. Always fit new

shoes in pairs to both the sides of the axles.
