11.1.5. DISPOSAL OF FAULTY AIR BAG UNIT

Airbags that have not been safely deployed can

cause severe injury to humans & a significant

damage to equipment. If special handling

procedures are followed the airbags can be safely

deployed & then all component parts can be

properly recycled.

DISPOSAL PROCEDURE

NOTE

The disposal of AIR BAG module assembly

shall be done in an area with adequate

ventilation.

A person handling any restraints module

assembly shall have to wear ESD (electro-static

discharge) straps to reduce any risk of

inadvertent deployment.

1. Follow the guidelines for removal of AIR BAG

module assembly as specified in workshop

manual. If the module assembly is found

defective before fitment on the vehicle, go to

step 2

.

2. Wear adequate ear protection device (

ear

plugs)

, safety goggles and safety hand gloves.

3. Connect the specified connector to the

restraints module assembly, with a pig-tail.

4. Clamp the restraints module assembly in a

shop bench vise

(or equivalent clamping

mechanism)

. The clamping force should be

adequate.

5. refer the following methods for clamping the

different air bag modules on bench vise

i. DRIVER AIR BAG (DAB)

The steering wheel should be clamped in such a

way that the DAB module should face upwards.

ii. PASSENGER AIRBAG

Airbag mounting bracket (

located on Cross Car

Beam)

used for mounting module on bench vice.

iii. SEAT BELT (PRE-TENSIONER)

Seat belt assembly can be directly held in bench

vice. Seat belt webbing length could be cut prior to

deployment.

Use a 2 core electrical wire at least 15m long, and

connect to the pig-tail.

6. Place a vehicle battery or equivalent source at

a distance of 15m from the restraints module

assembly. The battery voltage shall be in the

range of 8-16V.

7. Connect one core of the electrical wire to the

positive (+ve) battery terminal.

DO NOT

CONNECT THE OTHER CORE WITH

NEGATIVE (-ve) BATTERY TERMINAL.

8. Make sure that no person is present within

15m radius of the "to be disposed" module

assembly.

9. Connect the other core of the electrical wire

with the negative (-ve) battery terminal for

deployment of module assembly.

10. After deployment, wait for at least 10 minutes

to ensure that none of the components within

the module assembly is too hot.
