Complaints

Engine lacks power

Back exhaust smoke

Excessive engine oil consumption

Blue smoke

Turbocharger noisy

Oil leak from compressor

Oil leak from turbine

Boost pressure too high

POSSIBLE CAUSES & REMEDIAL ACTIONS

Restriction in turbocharger oil drain line.

Remove restriction or replace defective parts as required.

Restricted engine crank case breather.

Refer to engine manufacturer's manual and remove

restriction.

Thick oil sludge or coke in turbocharger central housing.

Change oil and oil filter, service or replace turbo as

required.

Faulty fuel injection pump and injectors

Refer to engine manufacturer's manual and replace or

adjust as required.

Improper valve timing.

Refer to engine manufacturer's manual for correct setting

and adjust as required.

Worn-out valves, piston rings, liners, internal engine

problems (increased blow by)

Refer to engine manufacturer's manual and repair as

required.

Boost pressure control valve stuck in open position.

Find and correct the cause of defect, adjust or replace

parts as required.

Boost pressure pipe / hose assembly damaged /

punctured and valve stuck in closed position.

Find and correct the cause of defect, replace parts as

required. Turbocharger damaged.

Refer to turbocharger service centre, analyze and correct

the cause of failure (turbo failure is normally due to lack of

oil, low oil pressure, bad engine oil condition, foreign

particle entry into compressor / turbine inlet).

Service or replace turbo as required.
