7.1.5 GENERAL SYMPTOMS DIAGNOSIS
POWER STEERING TROUBLE SHOOTING
GENERAL
•
Power Steering System trouble shooting requires
correct approach and analysis.
•
First key to diagnose a steering problem is to un-
derstand the exact problem.
•
Save a lot of time and work by talking to the cus-
tomer/driver, understand and verify the problem
reported.
•
Walk around the vehicle, looking for anything that
may be an obvious cause of the problem.
•
Check the following
1. Are tyre sizes, tyre variety and air pressure cor-
rect to original specification?
2. Is the steering wheel original equipment?
3. Has the suspension been modified in any way
that would affect steering?
4. Is the steering fluid in reservoir filled to proper
level?
5. Is the power steering pump belt properly adjust-
ed?
6. Is the engine idle speed correct and steady?
7. Has the steering aggregates been disturbed off
its original settings?
8. Any record of accident/heavy impact load that
would affect steering?
The above preliminary checks help to analyze the
problem and guide for corrective action, as required.
Most steering problems can be charted out to com-
mon complaints as given below:
