NOTE
If only oil seal needs to be changed, measure rotat-
ing torque of pinion with the help special tool. In this
case use new collapsible spacer and keep same ro-
tational torque of pinion as before.
9. Place differential case in vice as shown. Apply
grease to new side gear thrust washers and hubs
of side gears. Assemble both side gears. Apply
grease to new pinion mate spherical washers,
and the pinion mate gears. Assemble pinion mate
gears.
NOTE
Always replace gears as a complete set.
Do not mix new gears with old gears, as this may
cause uneven wear and shorter gear life.
An easy way to assemble the side gears and pin-
ion mate gears is to have all parts lubricated
before assembly.
Assemble both side gears and thrust washers,
hold them in place with one hand, and then as-
semble the pinion mate gear to hold the side gear
in place. Rotate the side gears until the holes of
the spherical washers and pinion mate gears line
up with the holes in the case. If the gears cannot
be rotated by hand, install one of the axle shafts
into the side gear splines and use a pipe wrench
to turn the shaft.
10.Use a drift to line holes of the gears up with case.
Insert Assemble shaft and drive on shaft to re-
move drift. Be sure vertical lock pin hole is lined
up with that of the case, and that pinion mate
washers are in place and lined up with gear and
case.
11.Assemble roll pin with a small drift. When roll pin
bottoms out, stake
(Peen)
metal of case over pin
in two places, 180 degrees apart.
12.Use a drift to line holes of the gears up with case.
Assemble shaft, drive on shaft to remove drift. Be
sure vertical lock pin hole is lined up with that of
the case, and that pinion mate washers are in
place and lined up with gear and case. When roll
pin bottoms out, stake
(Peen)
a little metal over
the edges in two places 180° Apart
