FRONT AXLE (4X4) 37 IV FRONT AXLE DISCONNECT (FAD) Front axle disconnect is used to engage and disengage the front axle of the vehicle with the transfer case. FAD has a motor to the do the actuation operation. The TOD ECU controls the Front Axle Disconnect actuator. TOD ECU generates a signal to engage and disengage the FAD actuator, it gets a feedback signal from the Front Axle disconnect actuator to signify if FAD actuator is engaged or disengaged. Facia switch light will glow in 4x2 mode and it will be switched off in Auto mode. Facia switch light will be blinking while the shift is in progress. CONNECTOR DETAILS PIN DETAILS PIN DESCRIPTION A Front Axle Disconnect Actuator Signal B Ground C Front Axle Disconnect Feedback Signal D Power Supply CAUTION Never apply any voltages to FAD using an external power supply. WORKING The collar rides on the outboard shaft when it is not in use. During use the collar is positioned so that both shafts share engagement with the collar. When the four wheel drive system is engaged the transfer case (TOD) is first engaged which in turns spins the front propeller shaft. The propeller shaft spins the pinion gear which turns the ring gear. The ring gear turns the differential case which spins the intermediate axle shaft. The clutch collar through use of an electric motor is pushed by a fork inboard. Once the intermediate shaft and the outboard shaft splines align the clutch collar will then engage the intermediate shaft and torque is then transmitted out to the wheel-end. The clutch collar is held engaged / disengaged by the electric motor. The system will engage / disengaged the clutch collar only when there is no torque being transmitted through the axle shafts via the propeller shaft. NOTE It is not recommended to shift from two-wheel drive to Auto mode with the rear wheels slipping, because this may damage the drive train components DISMANTLING 1. Take the removed disconnect cover assembly from disconnect housing, clean the oil with the help of cotton waste. 2. Remove the electrical motor from disconnect cover assembly by removing bolts connecting motor to disconnect cover assembly.
