10.5 GENERAL SYMPTOMS DIAGNOSIS

Vibration

Improper phasing.

Loose outside diameter.

Slip splines not sliding

easily.

Propeller shaft out of

balance.

Worn U-joint.

Inadequate torque on

bearing strap bolts.

Centre bearing rubber

failed (4x2).

Shaft is bottoming.

Check propeller shaft for correct yoke

phasing.

Replace shaft centre bearing.

Check the splines if required replace either

front or rear shaft to get the new splines.

Check for missing balance weight.

Replace U-joint.

Tighten the bolts with required torque.

Mark on spline shaft and tube yoke to be

matched.

Premature

wear

Improper lubrication.

Excessive U-bolt torque on

retaining nuts.

Worn or damaged seals.

Replace the affected parts.

Slip spline

wear

Improper lubrication.

Worn or damaged part

contamination.

Lubricate slip splines according to specifications

Check for installed, lengths check condition of

slip yoke splines and seal.

Spline frozen Check spline.

Lubricate slip splines according to specifications

Check for installed, lengths check condition of

slip yoke splines and seal.

Yoke fracture

Mating yoke lug interference at

full jounce and rebound.

Replace shaft.

Contact

damage

Check for centre bearing

bracket attachments

integrity.

Check for damage to the

underbody of the vehicle.

Normal bearing wear - replace.

Check installed lengths. Realign mounting

bracket to frame cross member to eliminate

interference with slinger.

NOTE

If the propeller shaft is suspected to have

excessive run-out contact the concerned DANA

SPICER service engineer.
