BRAKES

ADJUSTMENT OF PARKING BRAKE

Before adjusting parking brake cable slackness,

confirm the following conditions.

a. Brake bleeding should be completed. (i.e. no air

trapped in the system).

b. Confirm pedal travel by depressing the brake

pedal for few times.

c. Check the lining condition of the rear brakes.

1. Put chocks on front wheels.

2. Jack up the rear axle

3. Loosen lock nut. Pull parking brake lever up by

two notches.

4. Tighten spherical nut till rear wheels start

jamming and cannot be rotated.

5. Release the parking brake and ensure that

wheels are rotating freely. Hold the spherical nut

in this position and tighten lock nut, to specified

torque.

6. Lower down the rear axle.

7. Remove chock from front wheels.

8. When correctly set, the lever should be against

its stop on the trailing shoe with minimum slack

in the hand brake cable.

INSPECTION OF PARKING BRAKE :

Pull the parking brake lever at its centre by 20 kg

force, with this force the travel should not exceed

5th notch position. Fig.

Check both the wheels are locked at this condition

and release the lever (i.e. take it to the 'Zero'th notch)

and check for free rolling of the wheels.

Both rear wheels should be free and there should

not be rear brake dragging.

For counting the notches easily, listen to the click

sound from the ratchet while pulling the parking brake

lever without pressing the button. A click sound

pertaining to each notch movement.

BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Fig.53

The push rod of the vacuum booster serves as the

brake pedal stopper when the pedal is fully released.

The brake pedal height adjustment should be

performed as below:

1. Make sure that pedal is fully returned by the

return spring.

2. Loosen nut on the adjusting eccentric pin of the

lever

1. Lock Nut

2. Spherical nut

Fig. 53 - Brake pedal height adjustment.

3. Turn the eccentric pin to get the required pedal

height in line with the clutch pedal.

4. After adjusting pedal height, brake light switch

to be set as per Fig. 38 & ensure that switch

does not obstruct pedal return to its fully released

position.

5. Operate the brake pedal a few times to ensure

proper brake application.

CAUTION:

After rear brake drum is machined to repair size of

283.5 mm dia the parking brake will become

ineffective, when usable stock of brake lining

thickness reduces to 0.7 mm and below. Hence

change the brake linings with new ones as soon as

the lining thickness reduces to 0.7 mm.
