ENGINE 273 MPFI

Selection of Shims

Step 1:

Put master shims of thickness 3 mm on all 4 valve

retainers. Put tappet and cam shaft over it.

Step 2:

Rotate the cam shaft and bring it to TDC position. Then

measure the clearance between tappet and cam shaft

lobe for inlet valve with the help of feeler gauge. Note

down the clearance.

Step 3:

Remove the TDC plate and again rotate the camshaft

and bring it to TDC position. Measure the clearance

between tappet and cam shaft lobe for exhaust valve

with the help of feeler gauge. Note down the clearance.

Calculation For Shim

Use the following formulae for selection of shim.

For inlet valve:

S = M + (C - 0.15)

For exhaust valve:

S = M + (C - 0.25)

S = Required Shim Thickness

M = Thickness of Master Shim i.e. 3 mm

C = Valve Clearance measured with the feeler gauge

when master shim is placed on valve retainer.

Step 4:

Remove the master shim from retainer. Select proper

shim as per calculation from shim box.

Select the shim size from the available sizes. Shim

size available from 2.5 mm thick to 3.9 mm thick at

the intervals of 0.050 mm and 2.525 mm thick to 3.875

mm thick at the intervals of 0.050 mm. Put the shims

of required thickness in respective places. Put tappet

and camshaft over it. Again measure the clearance

between tappet and camshaft lobe and ensure specified

valve clearance.

To access upper mounting bolt of the alternator,

remove rear shelf / Lift the vehicle on two post lift.

Loosen upper bolt of the alternator i.e. belt-tension

adjusting bolt.

Remove V-belt from damper pulley.

Remove the belt from alternator pulley.

ALTERNATORBELT REMOVALANDREFITMENT

PROCEDURE

Removal Procedure

Remove negative terminal of battery .

PRECAUTION

Ensure that the removed terminal is away from

the battery negative post.

Position the car on a two post lift.

Loosen lower mounting bolt of alternator.

Check the condition of belt. Replace if wear down

or any cut is found.
