BRAKE SYSTEM

509

BRAKES

BLEEDING OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

The process of removing air from the hydraulic pipe

line and cylinders is known as “Bleeding”.

Bleeding operation should be carried out; whenever

you have worked on the brake system (Dismantled

any hydraulic brake part, e.g. wheel cylinder, TMC,

brake hose etc.)

When seals are worn, it is possible for the air to enter

the wheel cylinders without any sign of fluid leaking,

causing a ‘Spongy’ pedal which is the usual

indication of air in the system.

It is vital that absolute cleanliness is maintained

throughout the entire bleeding operation. All equipment

to be used must be entirely free from petrol, kerosene

or any form of mineral oil, as mineral contamination

spreads rapidly in the hydraulic system, causing a

dangerous deterioration of the rubber seals. Always

replace the rubber dust cover on each bleed screw to

prevent dirt entering the bleed tube during subsequent

bleeding operation.

CAUTION:

1. Brake fluid may cause damage to paint. So make

sure that brake fluid does not touch the painted

surface. In case brake fluid comes in contact with

painted surface, wipe immediately & clean the

surface with water.

2. Always use recommended brand of brake fluid.

3. Do not use the fluid bled from the system for

refilling in to the reservoir.

4. For effective brake bleeding use pressurized

systemand transparent bleeder tube. The bleeding

bottlemust be held above the level of wheel cylinder

for effective scavenging of air from the system

.

Bleeding Procedure is as follows:

Following points should be noticedwhile brake bleeding

process.

Brake fluid from sealed container of 250 or 500 ml

to be used.

Once some brake fluid is consumed fromcontainer,

the container should be discarded.

Separate funnel to be used for filling brake fluid in

the brake fluid reservoir, that funnel should not be

used for any other purpose.

Separate transparent tube to be used for removing

oil during bleeding. That tube to be used only for

brake bleeding purpose.

Bleed bottle should be separate from the brake

fluid bottle.

Bleeding Kit to made. The Kit should contain

bleeding bottle, transparent plastic tube, funnel for

filling, sealed brake fluid, spanner, cotton waste

(cloth) for bleeding purpose.

Bleed oil should be scrapped.

For topping up only closed container of 100 or 250

ml to be used.

NOTE:

Always bleed the system in a following sequence. It

should be such that, the farthest side from the TMC

should be bled first. So here it will be REAR LEFT

followed by Rear Right, Front Left and Front Right

respectively

.
