STEERING SYSTEM

The construction and working of steering system

is as follows :

Steering system used in

TATANANO

is of Mechanical

Rack and Pinion type.

The Rack and Pinion (RPS) assembly (6) is attached

to the intermediate shaft (4) through lower universal

joint (5). Tie rod assembly (7) is connected to both

ends of RPS assembly.

When the steering wheel (1) is turned, the motion is

transmitted from steering upper column (2),

intermediate shaft (4) and then to the pinion of RPS

assembly through upper and lower universal joints (3

and 5)

Since the pinion teeth are in mesh with the rack teeth,

the motion is further transferred to the rack and

converted to linear motion. The linear motion is then

transferred through the tie rods to the steering knuckle

through outer ball joints which finally turns the wheel.

Rack-and-pinion gear set performs following two

important functions :

(a) It converts the rotational motion of the steering

wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the

wheels/tyres.

(b) It provides a gear reduction, making it easier to

turn the wheels/tyres.
