SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)

18

1.7.2.3. AIR BAGS

A. DRIVER AIR BAG (DAB)

The driver airbag module is located in the steering

wheel and the SRS ECU controls its function. A

bag within the module inflates to protect the driver

in the event of a collision severe enough to deploy

the system.

The driver airbag module connects to the steering

column wiring harness via a rotary coupler called

as clock spring. Within the driver airbag module is

a squib which, when given the correct current by

the SRS ECU, inflates the airbag by initiating a

chemical reaction. In deployment, the airbag

inflates within a fraction of a second and then

deflate at a controlled rate as the driver body

regions; typically head and chest interact with

airbag. Vents in the airbag control its deflation.

The SRS ECU regularly applies a test current to

the driver airbag squib to confirm continuity of the

ignition circuitry.

ON VEHICLE SERVICE

!! WARNING

Always work on the air bag module from the side.

Always carry the module with the cover side

uppermost or away from the body in case being

carried vertically. Do not attempt to repair, open or

apply power (Multimeter) to the air bag module

terminals.

! CAUTION

Disconnect the battery negative lead.

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the battery connections.

2. Rotate steering wheel in 90-degree clockwise

direction, insert screw driver from bottom cover

to disengage DAB snap, rotate steering wheel

in 90-degree anticlockwise direction, insert

screw driver from bottom cover to disengage

DAB 2nd snap.

3. Disconnect the DAB connector coming from

clock spring and disconnect the horn pad

connection and take out the DAB assembly

from the vehicle.

FITMENT

Follow reverse procedure for fitment.

! CAUTION

We need to press fit the airbag and it is to be

insure that it is fitted properly.

NOTE

After fitment connect the diagnostic tool and clear

all fault codes if any.
