5. REPAIR AND INSPECTION DETAILS

A. TIMING BELT

Inspect the belt for excessive wear or damage.

Replace the belt if any of the following are noticed.

Hardening - belt will be glossy and hard.

Pressing on the belt with a fingernail will not

make an impression.

Cracks in rubber.

Canvas showing

Broken, cracked, or missing belt tooth

Excessive wear on side of belt. The side of the

belt should appear to have been cut with a knife.

In the early stages of belt wear, the load side of the

belt teeth will look like fluffy canvas with some of

the rubber missing.

In the later stage of wear, the canvas will be gone

from the belt teeth and showing exposed rubber.

NOTE

Inspect the condition of the water pump, belt

tensioner, and timing belt idler pulley when

replacing the timing belt.
