POWER STEERING

XIII STEERING COLUMN

Removal of Steering Column From vehicle:

Fig. 14 &15

Caution

This is collapsible steering column. Proper precaution

must be taken to avoid damage to the plastic shear

pins. If the plastic shear pins get damaged during

assembly & disassembly, replace the complete upper

steering column. If the damaged column is fitted it

will not serve the purpose during crash.

Note: For removal of SRS air bag steering wheel

refer air bag section.

1. Dismantle the universal joint connection on the

steering gear box end & near the fire-wall & take

out the steering spindle bottom.

2. Removal of steering wheel

a. Remove the side covers on the steering wheel

b. Dismantle the two screws on the side of steering

wheel

c. Take out the top cover of steering wheel after

dismantling the horn connections

d. Dismantle the steering wheel by proper puller

3. Dismantle the nacelle top & bottom

4. Dismantle the combination switch

5. Removal of Steering column upper

a. Dismantle the screw on the fire wall

b. Dismantle the screw on the control mounting

bracket

c. Take out the steering column from the vehicle.

Installation of Steering column on the vehicle :

1. Check the following for the condition of steering

column.

a. Free rotation of steering spindle

b. Condition of plastic shear pins. If plastic shear

pins are damaged, replace the steering column.

c. Steering spindle bottom for grease.

2. Assemble the steering column on the vehicle, at

firewall & on the column mounting bracket.

3. Assemble the combination switch on the steering

column.

4. Assemble the nacelle bottom& top on the steering

column.

5. Assemble the steering spindle bottom, on the

steering gear box end & on the fir wall end.

6. Assemble the steering wheel, on the steering

column, in wheels straight ahead condition.
