SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)

SRS

11.1.4 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

NOTE

DTC’S are the most important source of information

when troubleshooting. When troubleshooting the

SRS, always inspect DTC’S before disconnecting the

battery.

The SRS system contains components which could

be potentially hazardous to the technician if not ser-

viced and handled correctly. The following guidelines

are intended to alert the technician to potential

sources of danger and emphasize the importance of

ensuring the good condition of SRS components

fitted to the vehicle.

It should be noted that these precautions are not

restricted to operations performed when servicing

the SRS system; the same care should be exercised

when working on ancillary systems and components

located in the vicinity of the SRS components; these

include but are not limited to:

Steering system –

(steering wheel airbag)

Body trim components –

(Passenger airbag, SRS

ECU, front impact sensing unit)

Electrical system components – (

SRS harnesses

etc.)

!! WARNING

1. The airbag modules contain extremely flammable

components. Contact with water, acid or heavy

metals may produce harmful or explosive com-

pounds. Do not dismantle burn or bring into con-

tact with electricity.

2. Do not expose an airbag module to heat.

3. The inflator is intended not to fire below the

threshold current. To avoid inadvertent triggering

of the airbag, NEVER apply a current through the

squib except with the specified test equipment

and procedures.

4. Never dispose the airbag module undeployed

without proper instructions as this may result in

possible injury. All deployments must follow spe-

cial instructions to be safe. All units shall be acti-

vated (deployed) prior to disposal.

5. The airbag modules or their components must not

be adapted or installed in any other vehicle other

than the specific vehicle for which they are de-

signed and manufactured. Any attempt to adapt

or install airbag modules or their components in

any other vehicle can result in personal injury to

the occupants in the event of accidents.

6. The system has back-up power for about 30 sec-

onds after the battery is disconnected. Wait for at

least ONE minute after disconnecting the battery

before servicing the vehicle to prevent accidental

deployment and personal injury.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

The following precautions have to be taken while

working on SRS system.

1. When removing, testing or installing an airbag

module, do not lean directly over it. Always refer

SRS component testing precautions

2. In order to assure system integrity, it is essential

that the SRS system is regularly checked and

maintained so that it is ready for effective opera-

tion in the event of a collision. Carefully inspect

SRS components before installation. Do not in-

stall a part that shows signs of being dropped or

improperly handled, such as dents, cracks or de-

formation. Dropped modules may get damaged.

In such cases contact the supplier for further ac-

tion.

3. Ensure SRS components are not contaminated

with oil, grease, detergent or water. It is essential

that SRS components are fitted using the rec-

ommended torques.

4. Do not install used SRS components from an-

other vehicle. When replacing SRS system, only

use TATA authorized genuine new parts.

5. It is essential that SRS components are fitted

using the recommended torques. Always use

specified earth fixings tightened to the correct

torque. Poor earthing can cause intermittent prob-

lems that are difficult to diagnose.

6. Do not cut, drill, braze or solder the gas generator

assembly.

7. Do not allow the air bag module assemblies to

come into contact with electrical current.

8. Never hammer on any SRS component - it might

get damaged internally.

9. Do not carry the airbag, with the cable assembly

connected - long cables can pick up Electrostatic

Charge particularly if dragged on the floor and

could lead to deployment of airbag.

10.Do

not attempt to refold the bag into the cover.

Deployment protection may be compromised or

injury may be induced. This is because foreign

objects could enter the bag, or the vehicle spe-

cific bag-folding pattern could be altered from its

original optimized design.
