STEERING SYSTEM

Inspection of dismantled parts

1. Examine the Housing set which consists of Case

steering Gear (1), Bottom bush (3). If damage to

any of the above components is evident then hous-

ing set must be replaced as a set.

2. Examine the Rack-bush (2) for damage or

excessive wear leading to loose fit with Rack. If

any of the above is evident, remove the Rack Bush

by knocking it out of the housing using a mandrel

gently.

3. Examine the Rack & Pinion set which consists of

Rack (7), Pinion (4), Ball bearing (5) and

Retainer ring (6). If damage to any of the above

item is evident then the rack and Pinion set must

be replaced as set.

4. Examine the Yoke (8) for Excessive wear and

damage. If fit between yoke bore on Case Steer-

ing Gear and Yoke is slack in either of designs,

replace theYoke by new one. If damage is evident,

replace the Yoke.

5. Examine the Yoke Spring (9). If found to be

damaged or found to be solid (compressed set)

replace the part.

6. Examine Inner Ball Joints (13) andOuter Ball joints

(15) for service failures (any play discard level more

than 0.1 mm at 100 g). If damage to the joints is

evident, replace the parts.

7. In case of accident vehicle and also during

regular overhaul the Rack (7), Pinion (4) and

Housing set should be checked for visual cracks,

breakage and bend. Check Rack and Pinion for

micro cracks. If any one of the above is evident,

replace the parts.

Disassembly

NOTE :

1. RPS assembly already removed from vehicle.

(Refer RPS assembly removal procedure)

2. Refer exploded view of Steering Rack and Pinion

Assembly (For M/S RANE)

while overhauling

procedure.

1. Hold the Steering Gear on a soft jaw vice.

2. Remove lock nut (16) and remove both the Outer

Ball Joints (14 &15) from the steering gear.

3. Remove the Bellow strap (20) and clips (19) on

either sides using a plier via IBJ Rod and dispose

them.

4. Remove the Bellows (18) on both side and

dispose.

5. Loosen the Inner Ball Joints (13) from the Rack

by arresting the Rack (7) with 36 mm double end

spanner. (Rack should not twisted while loosening

inner ball joint)

6. Loosen the Yoke Cover (10) using 17 mm double

end spanner and dispose the Yoke cover.

Remove the spring (9) and Yoke (8) from the

housing.

7. Loosen the Pinion Cover (11) using 42mmdouble

end spanner and Remove the Pinion bearing Sub

assembly (4, 5, and 6). Dispose the Pinion cover

(11) along with the oil seal (12)

8. Remove the Rack (7)
