REGULAR MAINTENANCE B. CHECK ANCHORAGE AND ELECTRICAL • CONNECTION Check mechanical and electrical connection on 1. the steering (steering column, Rack and Pinion gear, and transmission parts). If necessary, tighten screws etc. according to 2. instructions from vehicle manufacturer, or if there is any damage, replace defective parts. CHECK DRIVING STRAIGHT - AHEAD • POSITION OF STEERING & VEHICLE Place front wheels on rotary tables and 1. determine total number of steering wheel rotations. From one steering stop, turn back by half the 2. number of steering wheel rotations. these should be insured by instrumented steering wheel other methods. Check whether the wheels being steered are in 3. the straight-ahead position. Make any correction which may be necessary 4. by turning the ball joint on the tie rod in or out. CHECK PLAY IN THE STEERING COLUMN • Check for play by moving the steering wheel 1. back and forwards horizontally and vertically. Once clearance is found, check the steering column bearing or replace the steering column. CHECK STEERING’S PLAY • When turning the steering wheel, immediate 1. steering motion response of the front wheels is requested. If no adequate response occurs, find the defective part - (steering column, intermediate shaft, and rack-and-pinion steering - and, if necessary, replace it. NOTE If no markers are present, then turn the steering gear from steering stop to steering stop. Then turn back from one steering stop by half the total number of steering wheel rotations. CAUTION A previous accident-type incident may necessitate a revision of the setting needs. Therefore, Check the steering system for warped installation, Check all other transmission parts for deformation, cracks, or torsion. STEERING (MANDO) 9
