PROPELLER SHAFT 7 10.6 MAINTENANCE, INSPECTION AND TESTS A PRELIMINARY INSPECTION All “U” joint should be inspected for leakage and damage each time the vehicle is serviced. If seal leakage or damage exists, the “U” joint should be replaced. Check the run out of propeller shaft. Check “U” joint strap bolts are tightened or loosened. Check propeller shaft centre bearing mounting bolts are tightened or loosened. Check slip splines is properly lubricated or not. Check output and input end yokes for looseness. If found loose, disconnect the propeller shaft, check the condition of splines of the end yoke and re-torque the end yoke retaining nut to specification, using a new nut. Check for Play in Universal joint. NOTE For end yoke tightening torque procedure refer the aggregate section on which the end yoke is fitted like gearbox, rear axle, etc. 10.7 REGULAR MAINTENANCE A GREASING I. LUBRICATION FOR SLIP SPLINES 1. Apply grease using a grease gun on the nipple until lubricant appears at the pressure relief hole. 2. Cover the pressure relief hole with a finger and continue to pump grease into the nipple until grease appears at the slip joint end. II. LUBRICATION FOR CENTRE BEARING Centre bearing is packed with grease for life. Hence no additional lubrication is required. Position the anti-roll bar and install the bearing block bracket on to the frame by tightening the flange head screws on both ends.
