PROPELLER SHAFT 6 10.5 GENERAL SYMPTOMS DIAGNOSIS SR. NO PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSES REMEDIES 1 Vibration Improper phasing. Loose outside diameter. Slip splines not sliding easily. Propeller shaft out of balance. Worn U-joint. Inadequate torque on bearing strap bolts. Centre bearing rubber failed (4x2). Shaft is bottoming. Check propeller shaft for correct yoke phasing. Replace shaft centre bearing. Check the splines if required replace either front or rear shaft to get the new splines. Check for missing balance weight. Replace U-joint. Tighten the bolts with required torque. Mark on spline shaft and tube yoke to be matched. 2 Premature wear Improper lubrication. Excessive U-bolt torque on retaining nuts. Worn or damaged seals. Replace the affected parts. 3 Slip spline wear Improper lubrication. Worn or damaged part contamination. Lubricate slip splines according to specifications Check for installed, lengths check condition of slip yoke splines and seal. 4 Spline frozen Check spline. Lubricate slip splines according to specifications Check for installed, lengths check condition of slip yoke splines and seal. 5 Yoke fracture Mating yoke lug interference at full jounce and rebound. Replace shaft. 6 Contact damage Check for centre bearing bracket attachments integrity. Check for damage to the underbody of the vehicle. Normal bearing wear - replace. Check installed lengths. Realign mounting bracket to frame cross member to eliminate interference with slinger. NOTE If the propeller shaft is suspected to have excessive run-out contact the concerned DANA SPICER service engineer.
