TRANSAXLE 53 1.6 GENERAL SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS: Complaint Component Causes Remedy 1. New Clutch : Difficulty in changing gear Difficulty in changing gear, following replacement of clutch. Burrs thrown up around spl ines causing st i f f movement on input shaft. Due to poor alignment of the transaxle on reassembly. Always use clutch aligning mandrel while assembling the clutch. The driven plate was improperly aligned. Do not force the transaxle but rotate the flywheel or transaxle shaft to line up input with splines. Aggressive location of shaft into hub. 2. Loss of Drive : With recently fitted clutch Loss of drive and loud clat ter, even though vehicle has covered only a few kilometers. The center hub of the driven plate has ripped out and possibly one or more of the springs have been pushed out. The weight of the transaxle has been hung on the clutch assembly. This has distorted the driven plate resulting in fai lure within a short period of use. Ensure that the transaxle shaft and transaxle are not hung on the clutch driven plate by using a pit jack or trolley jack to support the gearbox on reassembly. Very aggressive clutch control . i e. “Racing star ts” or towing a heavier vehicle. Do not “boy race” Educate the driver. Do not tow heavier vehicle. 3. Slipping Clutch Clutch slips The clutch friction material is contaminated. There may be an oil leak from the engine or transaxle. Carefully check the condition of engine and gear- box oil seals. 4. Juddering During Pulling Away Clutch judder on initial take up of torque. Oil or grease found be- tween the clutch disc & clutch cover. Excessive grease appl ied on input shaf t splines. Only use the recommended amount and type of grease. Avoid excessive lubrication which could contaminate the frictional surfaces. 5. Noisy Clutch The clutch is noisy A location lug on the release bearing has broken. A lug has broken. Another faul t in the mechanical operation of the clutch has caused the lug to break. For example, the yoke arm is out of shape or wrongly positioned at the time of assembly. Check the yoke and the guide sleeve and replace. I f signs of wear are present. Ensure components are lubricated.
