ELECTRICAL 635 ELECTRICAL 8. TECHNICAL DATA Voltage : 12 Volts System : Pre-EngagedDrive Direction of Rotation : Anti-clock Wise (Viewed from pinion end) Weight : 2.45 kg (approx.) 9. PRECAUTIONS The following points are to be adhered, when starting the Starter Motor : 1) Ensure that all Electrical Positive & Negative Connections to Starter motor are in good Condition. 2) Press the Start button firmly and release as soon as the engine fires. 3) If the engine does not fire at once allow it to rest, before operating the Starter switch again. 4) If the engine does not start, ascertain the cause and do not run down the battery by keeping the Starter button ON. 5) Do not operate the Starter when the engine is running. Otherwise serious damage could occur both to the Starter pinion and the flywheel ring gear teeth. 10. ROUTINE CHECKS 1) Ensure that the starter motor mounting bolts to the engine are securely fastened for proper earthing. 2) Cheek electrical connections are clean and tight. 3) Cables should be examined for fractures particularly where the strands enter the terminal lugs. 4) Inspect fixing bracket for any cracks. DO’s 1) Ensure that all electrical connections in the circuit including the battery are clean and secure. 2) Observe correct polarity. i.e. connect negative to negative and positive to positive. 3) For earth return system, check the cable connection from Starter to earth and battery negative terminal to earth point. 4) Ensure minimum cable length for starter circuit & battery. 5) The total resistance of the starter circuit including that of return path and junctions should not exceed 0.002 ohm 20°C. 6) Themain feed cable should be supported to prevent the cable weight and vibrations from coming on to the electrical terminals. 7) While washing the vehicle with high pressure gun starter motor should be suitably protected. 8) Maintain battery in good condition by checking charge level and electrolyte specific gravity 9) Ensure there is enough fuel in the tank to avoid air lock. DONT’S 1) Do not operate the starter motor when the engine is running as this could result in damaging the starter motor pinion and flywheel ring gear 2) Do not crank continuously. If the engine does not fire immediately, allow sometime to cool the starter motor before cranking again. 3) If still the engine does not start, ascertain the cause and do not drain the battery by cranking the starter motor 4) Do not inch (move) the vehicle using starter motor. 5) Do not subject the starter motor to continuous oil/ water drip. 6) Do not accelerate immediately after a start. (Allow the engine idle rpm to stabilize).
