DRIVETRAIN 311 DRIVETRAIN Drive train consists of Clutch, Transaxle andDrive shaft. CLUTCH The clutch in the TATA NANO is a Single Plate Dry Friction Diaphragm type. It is mechanically actuated by a cable connecting clutch pedal and the clutch release lever. The diaphragmspring in the clutch cover is of a tapering finger type, which is a solid ring in the outside, with a series of tapered fingers pointing inward. The clutch disc, carrying six torsional coil springs, is positioned on the transmission input shaft with an involute spine fit. The clutch cover is secured to the flywheel, and carries the diaphragm spring in such a way that when the clutch release bearing is held back the peripheral edge of the spring pushes on the pressure plate against the flywheel (with the disc in between). This is the engaged condition of the clutch. Depressing the clutch pedal causes the release bearing to advance and pushes on the tips of the tapered fingers of the diaphragm spring. When this happens, the diaphragmspring pulls the pressure plate away from the flywheel, thereby interrupting the flow of drive from flywheel through clutch disc to transmission input shaft. TRANSAXLE The TATANano has a Transaxle TA-59 which is at the rear of the vehicle along with the engine. The transaxle has the shortest possible distance between the lay shaft axis and input shaft axis (centre distance). All the forward gears are synchromesh and the reverse gear is sliding mesh. The Vehicle speed is detected with a help of electronic sensor which is fitted on the Differential of the Transaxle. The Gears are shifted with help of Push pull cables. These Cables ensure that there is negligible vibration transmitted to the Gear lever, making gear shifting a delightful experience. DRIVESHAFT Driveshaft are flexible assemblies, which transmits engine power to independently suspended wheels. They consist of an inner and outer constant velocity joint connected by an axle shaft. Both inner and outer joints are completely flexible and can move in and out. INTRODUCTION
