SRS 10 10.3 SRS OPERATION The basic function of an airbag is to provide cushioning effect to occupants. It works in conjunction with seat belts and airbags. The seat belt pretensioners remove any slack from the belt system during the initial phase of an accident. The load limiters in the belts reduce the load level on the chest by release of belt length from the retractor assembly. In the event of a collision, airbag SRS ECU monitors the rate of deceleration induced by the collision, through impact sensors, to determine whether the airbags should be deployed. The circumstances affecting different collisions (vehicle speed, angle of impact, type and size of object hit etc.), vary considerably and will affect the rate of deceleration accordingly. NOTE: The airbag SRS is not designed to operate as a result of roll - over, rear collisions, minor frontal or side impacts nor will it operate as a result of heavy braking or driving over bumps and potholes. 10.4 TIGHTENING TORQUES Sr. No. Description Torque (Kg-m) 1 SRS ECU mounting fasteners 0.9 2 PAB bracket to CCB fixing (M5 X 19) 0.4±0.05 3 Clock spring fasteners 0.2~0.3 4 Front remote sensing unit 1.0 5 Side remote sensing unit 0.8±0.1 10.5 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS The SRS system contains components which could be potentially hazardous to the service engineer if not serviced and handled correctly. The following guidelines are intended to alert the service engineer to potential sources of danger and emphasize the importance of ensuring the integrity of SRS components fitted to the vehicle. It should be noted that these precautions are not restricted to operations performed when servicing the SRS system; the same care should be exercised when working on ancillary systems and components located in the vicinity of the SRS components; these include but are not limited to: Steering system - (steering wheel airbag) Body and trim components - (passenger airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioners, SRS ECU, front remote sensing unit and passenger air bag deactivation switch) Electrical system components - (SRS harnesses etc.) WARNING: 1. The front airbag modules contain extremely flammable components. Contact with water, acid or heavy metals may produce harmful or explosive compounds. Do not dismantle, incinerate or bring into contact with electricity. 2. Do not expose an airbag module or seatbelt pre-tensioner to heat exceeding 85°C (185°F). 3. The inflator is intended not to fire below the threshold current. To avoid inadvertent triggering of the airbag, NEVER apply a current through the squib except with the specified test equipment and procedures. 4. Never dispose the airbag module undeployed without proper instructions as this may result in possible injury. All deployments must follow special instructions to be safe. All units shall be activated (deployed) prior to disposal. It is recommended that the module assembly be dismantled for recycling of the individual components. The gas generator after activation can be scrapped as metal or depending on design.
