They essentially consist of a special magnetic core wound with a coil on its whole length. A second coil is present on each end of the core. The displacement of a permanent magnet near the sensor changes the magnetic field and thus varies the voltage of the end coils. The sensor has an integrated circuit which also produces the output signal. P Main coil S1 – S2 Secondary coil M Permanent magnet Operation: The main coil, which receives an alternating voltage from an external generator, creates a magnetic field in the sensor core. This mag- netic field induces the voltages V1 and V2 in the S1 and S2 secondary coils. The secondary voltages are wound and connected so that the total voltage is given by VS = V1 + V2. With the magnet in central position the out- put voltage VS = 0 Volt because V1 = - V2. When the magnet moves to one end, the magnetic field in the coils S1 and S2 changes and, as a consequence, it increases on one side and decreases on the other side. This difference in the magnetic field causes a variation in the voltages V1 and V2. As soon as the magnet moves, the output voltage (VS) starts to increase. .
