8.2. PROCEDURE FOR ADJUSTING FREE PLAY/NOISE
This procedure to be followed only when there is any noise reported from the Rack and pinion steering gear
assembly during vehicle operation. Procedure to be carried out by trained / expert operator.
Dismantle the gear assembly from the vehicle and follow the procedure as given under
Step 1
Clamp the steering gear
assembly properly and check
the free pinion torque using
dial type torque indicator
(Range: 0~60 kgf-cms).
Step 2
If the average pinion torque
falls below 1.7 N-m, tighten
the yoke cover to 10º after
loosening the Locknut and
check the average free pinion
torque found between 1.1 to
1.7 N-m.
NOTE:
(This step can also be tried on
vehicle level condition without
removing the steering gear
assy. While carrying out this
adjustment, free pinion torque
need not be checked. Noise
level can be checked in
vehicle level
)
Step 3
If the average pinion torque
found not OK, repeat the step
2 till to achieve the required
average free Pinion torque of
1.1 to 1.7 N-m.
Refer Step 2 photograph
Step 4
After achieving correct pinion
torque, tighten Locknut to 40
Nm torque by supporting the
yoke cover with 19mm Allen
key to avoid yoke cover
rotation and reassemble the
gear in the vehicle and check
for the noise by road test.
