3. SAFARI OCCUPANT RESTRAINT SYSTEM

(ORS) :

The Safari ORS system mainly consists of the

following components :

1. Seat belts - Fitted on the LH and RH B pillars.

2. Belt Load Limiters - Fitted inside the belt

retractor.

3. Belt Pre-tensioners - Fitted in the belt retractor.

4. Clock spring - Fitted on the steering column.

5. ORS ECU - Fitted on the tunnel under the

console.

6. Driver airbag - Fitted behind the horn pad.

7. Passenger airbag - Fitted behind a special cover

on the dashboard.

Working :

When the ORS ECU senses a crash of

sufficient severity, it gives a "FIRE" signal to

the belt pretensioners and the airbags. The belt

pretensioners remove the slack in the belt

reducing occupant forward motion, whereas the

airbags protect the occupant head and chest from

severe injuries due to interaction with vehicle

interiors. Load limiters induce slack into the belts

when the belt loads exceed a predefined limit.

However load limiters are always used with

airbags only.
