INSTALLATION OF WHEEL CYLINDERS: 1. Install the wheel cylinder assembly on to the back plate with the setscrew and washers. 2. Tighten the wheel cylinder mounting screws to a torque specified. Fit the bleed screw and tighten to a torque specified. ASSEMBLING NEW AUTO ADJUSTER After the auto adjuster has been removed from the brake assembly, the old one has to be quarantined, To assemble the new adjuster, the following to be done 1. Apply enough grease to the female push rod 2. Then apply enough grease to the female push rod threads 3. Assemble the adjuster nut (ratchet) to the male push rod 4. Then assemble the male push rod into the female push rod 5. The adjuster assembly is ready for assembly 6. Then assemble it to the shoe assembly. 7. Assemble the adjuster to the shoe assembly INSTALLATION OF BRAKE BACK PLATE: 1. Clean the back plate. Fit the wheel cylinder to the brake back plate as specified in the Installation of wheel cylinder. 2. Lightly smear high melting point graphite grease to the back plate back pads and abutment, contact faces of the strut, hand brake lever, etc. Keep the grease away from the brake shoe lining Installation of Brake shoe: 1. Attach the shoe return spring (2) to the trailing shoe. Fit the pawl (3) to the pin (10). Hook the short end of the spring into the hole in the pawl lever and use pliers to attach the opposite end of the spring on to the web. 2. With the adjuster assembly in its minimum length condition, offer the short leg of the male rod to the pawl. 3. Fit the male fork end to the leading shoe and attach the shoe return spring to the appropriate hole in the shoe. 4. Attach the other shoe return spring to the opposite end of the shoes and adjust the length of the adjuster until the shoes will clear the wheel cylinder pistons. 5. Place the shoes, springs and adjuster on to the abutment plate of the back plate and locate the spring (2) under the plate and the shoes in the abutment groove. 6. Using Shoe Hold down Tool fit the shoe hold down springs and pins to both the shoes. Remove the elastic band from around the wheel cylinder and reduce the length of the adjuster assembly until the shoes rest on the wheel cylinder pistons. 7. Fit the hand brake cable to the lever on the trailing shoe, ensuring the nipple on the cable is correctly located in the end of the lever. 8. Clean the exterior of the drum with a wire brush and wipe the inside with a clean rag. NOTE The cable should just be tight without pulling • the operating lever from the ‘fully off’ position.
