STEERING 8 F. STEERING WHEEL PLAY 1. Position the front wheels straight ahead and switch OFF the engine. 2. Turn the steering wheel to measure rotation/travel of the steering wheel to left and right without turning the front wheels. • The steering wheel play value is “a” = 0 to 10 mm. • If the play is within the specified limit the steering linkages are OK. • If the steering wheel free play is more than specified value, then inspecting the following areas & replace the components if found defective. a. Tie rod end ball stud for wear / looseness. b. Lower arm ball joint for wear / looseness. c. Steering shaft joint for wear / looseness. d. Steering pinion or rack gear for wear / looseness. e. Each component of steering system for looseness. f. Strut upper cup for wear NOTE: The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation: • The EPAS warning light does not illuminate. • The steering effort can suddenly increases, if the operation of the EPAS system is stopped to prevent serious accidents when it detects malfunction of the EPAS system during selfdiagnosis. • Extreme continuous steering may increase the steering efforts. This occur to prevent internal overheating and permanent damage to steering system. • A click noise may be heard from the EPAS relay after the ignition switch is turned ON or OFF position. • Motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is at low driving speed. • The steering wheel may not unlock normally in some cases when ignition key turned on or engine start/stop button pressed. If this happens, turn the steering wheel to the right or left slightly to unlock the steering wheel while turning the ignition key or pressing engine start/stop button.
