OVERHAULING OF STEERING RACK AND 7. PINION ASSEMBLY PRECAUTIONS A. The following general precautions to be followed during servicing and during overhauling of rack and pinion assembly: Plug the ports tight with protective caps in the • steering gear. Use only special tools and do not hammer to • re-move components from steering gear. Do not attempt to weld any broken steering • component. Replace the component with the original equipment. DISASSEMBLY OF RACK & PINON B. Hold the Steering Gear on a soft jaw vice. 1. Remove lock nut and remove both the Outer 2. Ball Joints from the steering gear. Take out outer ball joint assembly. 3. Remove the bellow clips on either side using 4. the plier and dispose them. Remove the Bellow strap and dispose them. 5. Remove the Bellows on both side and dispose. 6. Loosen the Inner Ball Joints from the Rack by 7. arresting the Rack with TBD double end spanner. (Rack should not twist while loosening inner ball joint). INSPECTION OF DISMANTLED PARTS C. Examine Inner Ball Joints and Outer Ball joints 1. for service failures (any play discard level more than 0.1 mm at 250 Kg). If damage to the joints is evident, replace the parts. In case of accident vehicle and also during 2. regular overhaul the Rack, Pinion and Housing set should be checked for visual cracks, breakage and bend. Check Rack and Pinion for micro cracks. If any one of the above is evident, replace the parts. STEERING (MANDO) 20
