BRAKES 26 C. BLEEDING OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM: The process of removing air from the hydraulic pipelines and cylinder is known as “Bleeding”. The brake hydraulic lines are based on diagonal split system. Whenever any brake line or hose is disconnected at the wheel, bleeding operation must be performed at both the ends of the line of the removed pipe or hose. (i.e. if the rear left side brake pipe or hose is disconnected, both the rear left and front right side of the system is to be bleeded) When any joint part of the Master cylinder, other joint part between the master cylinder and each brake of the wheel is removed or the level of brake fluid in the reservoir has been allowed to fall so low that the air has been drawn into the system, then the hydraulic brake system must be bled at all 4 wheel brakes. CAUTION: Use only DOT4 brake fluids confirming to SAE J1704 from a sealed container. Ensure brake fluid is not contaminated. Entire Bleeding operation should be carried out with the Engine ON (running) condition only. As the hydraulic lines of brake system are of DIAGONAL SPLIT, always perform bleeding operation starting with the caliper farthest from master cylinder and then at the rear brake assembly of the same brake circuit. Repeat the same on the other brake circuit also. A normal bleeding procedure can be employed whenever: Changing brake fluid as per the service intervals / schedule. Replacing new brake system part like ABS hydraulic unit, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, correction valves and repair of hydraulic lines. Spongy / Soft brake pedal or pedal travel high complaint. 1. BRAKE BLEEDING PROCEDURE (WITHOUT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL) CAUTION Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle, it may damage the paint, if the brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water. Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter is allowed to contaminate the brake fluid. NOTE Always use the brake fluid recommended in the specification list. Do not reuse the drained fluid. Entire bleeding operation should be done with ENGINE ON (running). Always use brake fluid from the sealed bottle. The reservoir on the master cylinder must be at the Max (upper) level mark at the start of bleeding procedure and check after bleeding each brake and same have to be topped up as required. 1. Open the bonnet. 2. Open the reservoir cap and pour brake fluid till the lower edge of the filler neck. CAUTION: At all times during the bleeding process, it has to be ensured that the fluid level in the reservoir does not drop below minimum. 3. Connect the bleed tube to the Rear right Drum Brake bleed screw and place the other end submerged in a transparent container containing sufficient brake fluid. 4. Depress the brake foot pedal for 2-3 times and hold it down. 5. Open the bleed screw. The fluid will flow into the transparent container. 6. Tighten the bleed screw to torque 0.7~1 Kgm and release the pedal.
