15 POWER STEERING the housing after the bleeding process has been carried out as described above. Switch off the engine and remove the blocks from the steering axle. 4. Checking the oil level : The oil level should be checked at operating temperature at intervals of 5000 - 6000 kms( 30003600 miles) or 100 - 120 operating hours. 4.1 Oil check on stationary engine : In order to establish that no air is sucked in when the engine is started, it must first be established whether oil loss has occurred when the engine is stationery. Therefore, the container should be filled with so much oil that the oil level is approximately 1 to 2 cm above the upper marking on the oil dipstick. 4.2 Oil check on running engine : The oil level falls slightly when the engine is running since the oil requires a pressure of approximately 2 to 4 bar to flow through the steering unit as a result of the resistance to flow. The oil should therefore once again be topped up so that the oil level lies constantly at the upper marking. The engine can then be switched off again. If this oil level is exceeded, then this is a sign that there is still air in the oil. 5. Changing the oil and Filter It is recommended to change the oil when the steering gear or pump or both the units are repaired or replaced. The filter in the oil reservoir should also be replaced and the lines cleaned at this time. When the soiled filter cartridge is removed, the bottom opening must be closed immediately while removing from the filter support to prevent dirty oil in the filter cartridge running back into the reservoir and entering the oil circuit. 6. Inspection Recommended : The ZF hydraulic ball and nut steering in short form with pump should be inspected in the installed condition, corresponding to the intervals laid down in the following table, and also depending on the vehicle application, by an inspector in the workshops of the vehicle company. Apart from installing a new filter this inspection also entails a functional test of the entire unit and the necessary replacement of new parts. It is not necessary to remove the steering unit and pump from the vehicle for the first and second inspection, unless defects have been established, which then, of course, necessitate the removal of the steering unit or the pump. In the case of the third inspection we recommend, due to traffic safety reasons, that the steering unit and pump should be checked for correct function and wear. For this purpose they must be removed from the vehicle, dismant led and the mechanical transmission parts should be checked for cracks. Note : If oil loss is apparent, check for leaks and repair if necessary.Repairs to the steering gear must only be carried out in authorised service stations.
