29 BRAKES Fig. 30 - Tandem Master Cylinder (Non ABS Type) TANDEM MASTER CYLINDER (Fig.6) DESCRIPTION The AS/AS tandem master cylinder consists of two independent chambers in a single casting, housing primary and secondary plungers fitted with gland seals having minimum friction. Each hydraulic system is so designed that any failure of pressure seal in one of the systems would not result in total failure of braking system, since the other system remains completely operational and ensures minimum safe braking performance. The specific design feature of the master cylinder is that pressure is developed in both the chambers simultaneously without any time lag. Under normal conditions when the brake pedal is depressed, the servo output rod pushes the primary plunger of the bore assembly. At the same time, the force of the primary spring moves the secondary plunger forward. Simultaneously the recuperating pressure seals on both the plungers cover the recuperating holes, developing pressure simultaneously in both the chambers. The pressurised fluid in the primary chamber is transmitted to the rear brakes and from the secondary chamber to the front brakes through the adaptor. The fluid reservoir comprises of two separate chambers serving each systemwith a common topping up connection at the upper portion. The reservoir comprises of a fluid level warning indicator [FLWI].
