STEERING 22 F. STEERING WHEEL PLAY 1. Position the front wheels straight ahead and switch OFF the engine. 2. Turn the steering wheel to measure rotation/travel of the steering wheel to left and right without turning the front wheels. • If the play is within the specified limit the steering linkages are OK. • If the play exceeds the limit then check for the play in the inner and outer ball joint of the RAP assembly and if found OK check the universal joints in the steering column assembly. The steering wheel play value is mention below: • Axial play 0.1 mm maximum • Free rotational play 1º maximum. G. POWER STEERING OIL FLUSHING PROCEDURE NOTE Always use fresh Power Steering oil, for flushing. In case of non availability of sufficient quantity of fresh Power Steering oil, the drained oil may be used after filtering (use filter paper – Size: 10 microns). 1. Minimum quantity of oil required is 2 liters (If the filtered oil quantity is less add fresh oil) 2. Drain the oil from the system. (For procedure refer power steering oil replacement procedure.) 3. Fit new filter assembly and fill the system with fresh / filtered oil. (For procedure refer steering reservoir filter replacement procedure.) 4. Start the engine and allow it to run for few minutes. With the engine idling, steer the wheels from RH lock to LH lock at least 10 times. Ensure oil level does not drop below the suction fitting in the reservoir. 5. Stop the engine and drain the oil from the system. NOTE • Remove the filter cartridge used while flushing in step 3. Store it separately (it can be used again for flushing other vehicle). • After flushing always use a new filter.
