TRANSMISSION 7 Explanation of the Selector lever positions: P–Park position enables the engine to be started while preventing the vehicle from rolling either forward or backward. For safety reasons, the vehicle’s parking brake should be used in addition to the transmission “Park” position. Since the output shaft is mechanically locked to the case through the parking pawl and rear internal gear, Park position should not be selected until the vehicle has come to a complete stop. R–Reverse enables the vehicle to be operated in a rearward direction. N–Neutral position enables the engine to start and operate without driving the vehicle. If necessary, this position should be selected to restart the engine while the vehicle is moving. D–Drive range should be used for all normal driving conditions for maximum efficiency and fuel economy. Drive range allows the transmission to operate in each of the six forward gear. Downshifts to a lower gear, or higher gear ratio are available by depressing the accelerator pedal. M/S–Manual / Sport Position: This position allows the driver to switch to Sport mode or activate Manual mode to select gear like a manual gearbox. The vehicle will remain in Sport mode if the shifter is not moved. As soon as shifter is moved forward or toward, the manual mode is activated. Shift Lock: Shift Lock ensures proper operation of the automatic transmission. The driver must depress the brake pedal in order to move the gear selector from Park (P) or Neutral (N) to any other range Reverse Lock Out: The selector shall not be moved into reverse while driving forward. However, in case selector lever is moved into Reverse (R) range, Reverse gear cannot be engaged until the vehicle speed is less than a threshold speed. This is to prevent Reverse engagement. Engine Braking: In Drive, engine braking is available in all gears except in 1st gear. In Manual Mode, engine braking active in first gear also. Safety Mode: If for any reason, a transmission component default, the TCU will set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) can be seen in diagnostic software will not appear on dashboard. The transmission may turn into a safety Mode. There is degraded mode where a gear or torque limitation will be active. In case of severe failure, the transmission may turn into a hydraulically safety mode and will default to 3rdor 5thgear depending on condition. For example, total loss of Controls.
