ELECTRICAL 8 E. CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCESS Generally circuit fails mainly in two possible conditions as follows. 1. Open circuit condition 2. Short circuit condition Here is the process to check and rectify the circuits to perform in normal condition. OPEN CIRCUIT CONDITION: Open circuit will occurs in some possible conditions as mentioned below. If connector is not inserted properly to its mating half. If terminals are not in contact with its mating terminals. If wiring has been chafed. Before checking the ECU components such as Airbag ECU, PEPS ECU etc. we need to check very carefully starting from the basic checks such as follows. Battery negative terminal should be disconnected from battery post to avoid component damage. Be sure that all connectors and terminals are connected properly without any loose connections and ensure connector is properly locked for locking connectors. Insert Sample terminal to ensure that connector is free from dust and corrosion and terminals is inserting properly into the connector tightly. While checking the voltage by the process mentioned above, be sure to check the wiring harness isn’t tampered at any point. Open circuit condition can be checked by either continuity check or voltage check procedure given below: CONTINUITY CHECK: Check the resistance between the both ends of the circuit and make sure that continuity flow should be there. If flow is not observed then open circuit might be occurred due to fault in insertion of terminals or wiring harness has been broken. In the above image we are measuring between the two connectors. If continuity has been observed the circuit is working fine. If not circuit is opened. VOLTAGE CHECK Voltage check can also be performed if voltage is given to specific circuit. Follow the instruction given below to perform voltage checks: With voltage applied to specific circuit, measure the voltage between terminal and body ground If the value showing in voltmeter is approximately 5V, then the circuit is okay. If it is 0 V, then the circuit is open. If a voltage drop of 2-3 V is observed, then there is some level of abnormal resistance in that circuit.
