23 TRANSFER CASE CLEANING & INSPECTION Cleaning Note : Before cleaning, check the magnets for the presence of metal par ticles. It indicates internal chipping of the transfer case. Using cleaning solvent, clean the old oil and dirt deposits. Dry the parts with low pressure compressed air. (20 PSI max) Lubricate ball bearings and needle bearings with ATF oil. Protect lubricated bearings from dust. Note : Always replace the hose coupling, O-Ring & oil seal with new parts. NORMAL GEAR SHAVE MARKS NORMAL GEAR GRIND MARKS Fig. 17 Inspection terms : Burr Local rise of material forming protruding sharp angle Chip An area from which a smal l fragment has broken off or cut Crack Surface break of l ine nature indicating par tial or complete separation of material. Excessive wear Heavy or obvious wear beyond expectat ions, consider ing conditions of operation. Indentation Displacement of material caused by localized heavy contact Galling Breakdown of metal surfaces because of excessive friction between parts. Particles of the soft material are torn loose and welded to the harder material. Nick Local break or notch. Usually displacement of material rather than loss. Scoring Tear or break in metal surface from contact under pressure. May show discolorat ion caused because of heat generated by friction Step wear Heavy wear that produces step that can be seen or felt between adjacent contact and non-contact surfaces. Uneven wear Condition of localized, unevenly distr ibuted wear. Includes hollows, shiny spots, uneven polish and other visual conditions.
