51 486 PL ENGINE P Timing Belt CAUTION : Timing belt should be immediately replaced if any flaws are evident. Inspect for l Surface glossy, l Non elasticity, so hard that even finger nail forced into it, produce no marks. l Cracked back surface. l Cracked or exfoliated canvass. l Cracked tooth bottom. l Side of belt cracked. l Side of belt badly worn. l Badly worn teeth. l Missing tooth. NOTE : l Normal belt should have clear cut sides, as if cut with a knife. l In initial stage of wear, load side tooth flank will look like fluffy canvas fiber, rubber gone and colour changed to white. l In last stage of wear, canvas on the load side tooth flank will be totally worn out exposing rubber. Fig. 116 Cooling System : Water Pump Check water pump for free rotation Check for flow rate Check for leakage through leakage hole if leaking. It indicates that water seal is damaged. Replace water pump if necessary. CAUTION : Dismantling and repairing of water pump is not recommended. Thermostat Checking for element : l Remove element from thermostat housing l Mount it on suitable fixture l Place fixture in a vessel filled with water l Fix dial gauge with its spindle on valve surface with a pretension l Heat the vessel l Measure the water temperature (Keep thermostat bulb away from the metal surface) l Note temperature when dial gauge needle starts moving indicating valve opening l Note down the water temperature when valve in fully open position. Total travel is 8 mm, in fully open position. The temperatures should be as specified. If it do not meet the specifications, replace the thermostat element. BELTS : Fig. 116 Power Steering Belt and A/C Compressor Belt Inspect belt for wear, cracks, Sign of failure for distortion in any of the V-groove in poly V-belts of power steering pump & of A.C. compressor. NOTE : TheV-belt rests on the inclined surface under tension. The base of belt in no case should be in contact with pulley. CAUTION : Replace belt if found defective.
